“We Can Be Heroes” Review By Allison Costa

As a Nerd Mom, I am always excited when streaming platforms make an effort to bring super heroes to younger kids!  In the new movie “We can be Heroes” on Netflix, the theme of kid super heroes is again brought into play! As much as I love the Marvel Universe as an adult, it can be a little intense for younger kids.  And yet the lure of super heroes, butt-kicking and having powers is always a lure at every age! So I appreciate when streaming services make an effort to make movies centered on and around younger kids.  In “We can be Heroes”, the earth is protected by a group named The Heroics.  However, the Heroics do not work well together and when Alien forces come to invade earth they are all captured.

These Heroics are all adults who also happen to have children that are super heroes.  Their children are rounded up for their “protection”, but quickly realize they need to escape before the aliens come for them too. In a cute coming of age tale, the young kids work together to hone their powers, become a team and of course take down the aliens and rescue their parents.  There are a few twists and turns (completely predictable but still fun), where allies are revealed to be enemies and a spy is found in their midst.  But in the end, the kids not only defeat the aliens but also replace their parents as Earth’s new protectors!

Reminiscent of former movies like “Sharkboy and Lava Girl”, and “SpyKids”, this movie is perfect for kids under age 10, and even tolerable for most pre-teens. Cute for family movie night and inspiring younger children to embrace super heroes.
