The Gifted Season 2 Premiere Review; The Hellfire Club takes Center Stage By Allison Costa

One of the early premieres this season came from “The Gifted”.  After a fantastic first season last year, that left us wondering what would happen to some of our favorite new mutants as they parted ways. Well, the second season picked up pretty close to where we left off!  A few months have passed by and now Polaris is close to delivering her baby.  She and Andy have joined with the Hellfire Club–a particularly nasty and aggressive mutant group that wants to bring a mutant-human reconciliation by any means possible.  Reed, Kate and Lauren Strucker are still working with Eclipse, Blink and John Proudstar, to rescue mutants on the run from Sentinel Services.  But the more time that passes, the more frantic Eclipse has become to find Polaris and his baby; and Kate is desperate to find her son Andy.  Although we must remember that Polaris and Andy were not kidnapped–they left.  They chose to join the Hellfire Club.  They wanted this new lifestyle.

Although we are seeing some new villains and plot twists this season, I do love that so much of the story line are items and people pulled directly from the comics.  The X-Men comic books series have so many different story-archs and amazing characters that there are plenty to chose from! Its exciting that the writers are choosing to stay true to some of the characters already well established in the comics instead of inventing their own new villains for the tv show.  The origin stories and mutants they have to choose from are endless.  I really think that this can be an amazing series if the writers do it well.  They already have the material, it is just the process of creating it visually.  Staying exciting and intriguing, without becoming cheesy or too dramatic.  Comic Book spin-off series always have to walk that fine line.  I wasn’t completely “wowed” by the season premiere, but because I enjoyed the show last season I am excited to see where it will go this season regardless.
