Ozark: Season 2 Review by Savannah Tatum

(Spoiler Alert)  The “Ozark” series follows Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who drags his family to the Missouri Ozarks to launder money after his old friend, Bruce, cheats the Navarro Cartel and is murdered. In the second season, Marty, the Snells, and the cartel have a deal in place to build a casino to sell the Snell’s heroin using the cartels money, Marty’s laundering skills, and Wendy’s political experience. The first episode of this season was nowhere near as captivating as the first episode of season one, but it still sucked you in by making you wonder what’s going on. Overall, Season two was good and has some great twists and shocking moments.

In a show like “Ozark,” the characters are the most important aspects of a series with little action and more drama-oriented. Personally, I found the main two characters, Marty and Wendy, annoying, but a lot of the side characters were really well developed. My favorite character, by far, was Buddy. He seemed to mainly be comedic relief, especially at first, but as the series progressed, he became a part of the family and almost like another father to Jonah. The saddest moment that killed me was when he died, and they had his funeral. They made it obvious how sick, he was and that he would die at some point in the show, but it didn’t make it any easier. Jonah’s eulogy was just so moving and so real, it really made me emotional.

Ruth and Wyatt Langmore were also great characters. They were both so well rounded and had much more depth than one would expect. Especially Wyatt’s undercover intelligence and desire to go to college, as well as Ruth’s newfound motherly instincts. Cade Langmore and Agent Petty were actually good characters for the part they play in the story, despite being absolutely nuts. Then there is Darlene, who is just an overall awful character, she is only there to cause trouble and keep the story going. I swear it makes you want to scream at the TV to just kill her already.

The moment that got me the most in season two is when Mason starts to lose his mind about the loss of his wife and starts preaching on a corner on the street, which results in CPS taking baby Zeke. This causes Mason to go over the deep end and kidnap Wendy, demanding her to get him his baby back. Upon getting Zeke back, Mason refuses to let Marty and Wendy leave and ends up getting shot. The whole thing just made me feel so bad for Mason and brought me right into the show.

Overall, The majority of characters are great, the season was pretty good, and is overall worth watching. I would give it a seven and will definitely be waiting to see what comes next!
