Supergirl Season Premiere: Life without Mon-el, Winn or J’onn! Review by Allison Costa

Last season ended with a series of bombshells; J’onn lost his father and decided that the DEO was no longer the place for him. Mon-El was called back to the future to defend a new threat, and this time he took Winn with him! And a new “evil” version of Supergirl was created.  So where does that leave us as the new season starts?  With a whole new breed of villains and Supergirl left to figure out her new normal once again!

The first two episodes of this season have shown us that they intend to focus on the human/alien debate.  In a not so subtle parallel to our own modern day society and events where certain groups of people are being discriminated against, not treated as equals and told to simply “Go Home”, the CW writers have lined up Supergirl and her allies to be at the forefront of the fight between those who believe Aliens should be treated as equals, and those who would attack them and send them away from earth.

Kara exposes two new threats in the Grave siblings, but she doesn’t yet realize that they are working for an even bigger threat in Agent Liberty.  We don’t yet know who this Agent Liberty is because they wear a mask, but I have a few guesses!  Macy Graves exposes the President of the United States to be an alien, and from the there the fires of hate just begin to fuel.  We see protestors on both sides outside of the White House, and we see divisions even within the DEO.  One of these division leads Agent Jenson of the DEO to free the Graves twins even after they have been captured!

What’s more is that we start to find new things out about Lena Luthor and her secret projects as well.  Although Lena is predominantly a good character, she does not like or trust Supergirl–despite being good friends with Kara and dating James. Macy Graves used to work for Lex, and years ago she was like a big sister to Lena before she turned evil.  Meanwhile James is still the CEO of CatCo, but he has been exposed as The Guardian.  And even though they are not pressing charges, thanks to Lena’s interference, he has been warned that if he acts as Guardian again he will be arrested and persecuted.  So now it is up to him to make a difference using his power and influence in media, instead of as the Guardian.  J’onn has been searching for a new and more peaceful purpose sine leaving the DEO and has been helping aliens in his own way.  However, now that there are new threats exposed, there is foreshadowing that J’onn will have to come back into the main fray.  Especially as the second episode ended with Supergirl being almost lethally poisoned from krypotonite that was released into the atmosphere.

It looks as though it will be a good season, although I am definitely missing the presence of Mon-El and Winn!  The show is not the same without them, their chemistry and their charisma.  I am going to be that they will appear in other episodes throughout the season and that there will be some amazing Cross-Over events this season!  Thank goodness for the cross-overs!  So stay tuned to see what becomes of our favorite super hero alien this season!
