Super Troopers 2 Almost Killed Me by John Winfrey Jr.

It almost happened. I almost died watching a movie. I laughed so hard, I couldn’t breathe and almost died. No, I didn’t participate in the 4/20 festivities and forget how to breathe. That also means my experience wasn’t enhanced in any way. Instead, a genuinely funny movie knocked it out of the park and the laughs kept coming. My jaw hurts and I’m now tired. It was that funny.

The comedy team known as Broken Lizard became widely recognized faces after the release of the original Super Troopers. They’ve done a few projects since then like Club Dread and Beerfest. They’ve got this chemistry that’s built on a foundation of lifelong friendship. It really shows in their movies and the dirty humor is delivered for any fun-loving degenerate adult.

The stoner comedy is a long overdue sequel to a classic. I was worried going in that it was just a big cash-grab with recycled jokes and the guys sold out and made a movie full of dad jokes. Neither was true. Instead, they’ve taken their time to write a proper sequel that holds it’s own against the original. I truly believe this movie was just as good.

The guys have been working random jobs since getting fired multiple times due to hilarious circumstances. Vermont Gov. Jessman comes back to recruit the ex-highway patrolmen to handle the takeover of land that has happened along the Canadian border. You’ll see familiar faces and hear recognizable references throughout the movie. The references aren’t sad attempts as holding onto the same jokes, but rather small lines that remind you how damn funny that movie was. There was even a not-so-subtle Breakfast Club reference in a scene where the guys are working as construction workers. (You mean I can actually order a liter of Cola?!)

Broken Lizard has a knack for writing general plots and filling them with really clever adult humor. The shenanigans are just as hilarious as ever and I found myself reeling from tears of laughter the entire time. I even hit a laugh fatigue level where I laughed too much to keep laughing. I’m not kidding.

Just as expected, there are scenes to offend just about anybody. It’s all in good fun though. In the middle of continuous waves of dick and fart jokes, is a funny plot and welcome new characters. Rob Lowe plays a famous ex-hockey player-turned-mayor of the small Canadian town. Genevieve, played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, is the political figure overseeing the town’s transition to American law.

Farva is still a man-child-pig and the rest of the crew’s personalities are bigger and bolder than before. They each have side-splitting moments on screen alone and with company. Jay Chandrasekhar plays double duty as actor and the movie’s director. Cameos from Fred Savage and Sean William Scott are right in line with the comedy delivered.

The funniest parts of the movie for me would be the puns and the stereotyping of Canadian culture. The puns seriously rival Bob’s Burgers, whether theier uses are good or bad. The French-Canadian accents from the mountain men, played mostly by Canadians. The entire cast nails it.

It’s hard to understand why they waited 17 years to release a sequel, but to me it was well worth the wait. We didn’t get a rushed money-hungry movie. I’m impressed they were able to maintain their filthy humor and deliver a worthy addition to the Super Troopers line. If they never release another one, it will be ok because they didn’t ruin the brand. If you’re looking for a way to enjoy 4/20 at the movies, I’d recommend Super Troopers 2. If you like adult humor and immature jokes, this one’s full of it. If you are looking for a classier way to spend your weekend, you probably shouldn’t watch this movie until you can watch it at home. It’s easy for me to give Super Troopers 2 an 7. It’s not a movie that will go down in history alongside it’s predecessor, but to me it should. It loses a few points if you reference it against other comedies. Hopefully, it’s going to be a cult classic that’s much more successful streaming and on DVD than in theaters, and that’s ok for these guys.
