God of War | First Impression by John Winfrey Jr.

We’re almost 72 hours into God of War being one of the biggest releases of the year, and I’ve shamelessly put in about 20 hours at least already. I just can’t stop playing and, judging from my friends list, neither can most of my friends. Its success isn’t just good marketing for a popular franchise. It’s the well-deserved recognition for developers that have slaved over making an undisputed classic. Kratos’s Scandinavian adventure is a huge, grandiose revival of a Playstation exclusive franchise that hasn’t had a new release in five years. This time around, Kratos is traveling with his son, Atreus, through a colorful and sprawling setting based on Norse mythology.

If you’re in the record breaking crowds of fans that are going to be playing God of War, you’ll see that it is by far one of the most graphically beautiful games ever made. The detail displayed on the screen is awe-inspiring. The cinematic cutscenes blend into gameplay seamlessly. It’s really like you’re fully immersed into a blockbuster movie. To make players’ experiences even better, there’s an “immersion” option that removes the in-game HUD and notifications. I highly recommend this option as it feels revolutionary and really makes the game feel special.

Today, I climbed a mountain. It took the Greek god of war 7 hours to climb that mountain and I wouldn’t have spent my Sunday doing anything else. The character progression is so well done that I never felt like I was overpowering my foes or speeding through the game without enjoying it. I’ve reached level 4 in my Leviatan Axe progression which is most of possible combos and I must say, I feel like  true badass. The interactions with his young son are personal and touching. I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here. Atreus forces Kratos to show his “soft” side, which isn’t very soft as you’d imagine. Either way, the father and son relationship brings a brand new dynamic to the series and ultimately delivers a classic gaming experience.
