February Re-Cap of Arrow, The Flash, Castle, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Blindspot, and Shadow Hunters by Allison Costa

February has been a very intense and busy month in the Super Hero World!

First, the Flash traveled to Earth 2, where Barry, Harrison and Frisco met dopple-gangers of themselves, Joe, Iris, and Katelyn. Amazingly they were able to escape Zoom and make it back to Earth 1 before the breaches closed, and they also managed to finally save Harrison Wells’ daughter! It’s a win right?? Of course not. In a sad twist of fate, Zoom reaches through and grabs Jay by the chest pulling him back through to Earth 2 at the very last moment and killing him. Then for the first time ever we see Zoom take off his mask and reveal that he is Jay! What the what??!! For a long time I have suspected that Jay was Zoom but just couldn’t figure out how. I am still not sure how it is possible for Zoom to be Jay, and yet still have a Jay on Earth 1, and have a prisoner with a mask on in Earth 2 that I think may be Jay as well?? How is this possible?!! Well we are talking super heroes and time and space travel so really any explanation is plausible. Suspend your disbelief for a while and hold on tight while we wait till the end of March to see things unfold!

Arrow has been an emotional roller coaster this month as well. The season started out with Felicity bound to a wheel chair and Oliver suffering yet another mid-life crisis as he continues to be our favorite brooding and guilt-ridden super hero. Damian Dark is finally captured, but not before he schemes and blackmails Oliver to drop out of the Mayoral election. The next big reveal is that everyone finally learns of Oliver’s son, William. Although in theory Felicity understands why Oliver kept the information from him, she is not able to forgive him for once again keeping secrets from her and holding her at arms length. In a sad turn of events after everything they have survived, Felicity gives him her engagement ring back and tells him that as long as he refuses to let her in she cannot marry him. In a very poignant exit, after weeks of frustration that her new nerve stimulation isn’t working, as she goes to leave Oliver she is able to finally stand up out of her wheel chair and walk out the door—when really she was meant to be walking down the aisle. Once it is revealed that Malcolm is responsible for William’s kidnapping and working with Dark, Thea finally tells him that he needs to get out of her life. Malcolm is once again proven one of those villains that we both love to hate and yet can’t quite live without whenever he has a redeeming moment. And I am still not sure who dies later this season but you can bet that it will end with another huge cliff-hanger before the final season.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow made a surprising move early on, as one of their main heroes, Carter, is killed in just the second episode. Part of me kept assuming that he would somehow come back? We know he is eventually reincarnated but that takes a lifetime. Of course they are time traveling so it is possible for him to re-enter the group but it leads you to wonder why they killed him off so suddenly? The plot has been a little all over the place in this new series as far as I am concerned, and yet I can see that the writers are trying to make the bond between this new hero team more believable. The most recent episode of their crash landing in Star City in 2046, where Grant Wilson, son of Slade Wilson (remember him??) has lead an uprising and destroyed the city is a bleak and tragic future that breaks Sarah’s heart. The team stays to make things right and we even get a guest appearance from a much-aged Stephen Amell. This show still has some kinks to work out, but at least they try to keep the action at a maximum to make-up for any leaks in storyplot.

Our last Super Hero does not hail from the CW Universe and instead is CBS’ Super-Girl. Now I know I have not been a fan and I have had some harsh reviews in the past, but surprisingly this show and its characters have started to grow on me. Living up to the name “super” especially in the wake of previous Superman TV shows has been no small feat, and I actually hold out hope for this show if it can survive. Even though it has begun to grow on me, I still have a sneaky suspicion it will be cancelled after the first season. It’s kind of a shame cause they really haven’t given it enough time to build and the characters are just now starting to become more interesting.

Even though our favorite superheroes are on hiatus for a few weeks, March still holds promising season premieres for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Quantico, which both air this next week. However, Blindspot both ended the month of February and kicked off March as it premiered on Leap Day this week.
Blindspot definitely leapt into full swing this week as it premiered with a non-stop episode which included a secret mission to the middle of the dark sea, the finding of a missing Pan-American flight, plans to destroy all American military communication, and an internal affairs review into the N.Y.O for classified documents that were shared with civilians. Believable? Not really, but still made for a great thrill ride. We still don’t know who Jane was, or why she concocted this crazy plan of hers. Who is to be trusted? Is the new Jane completely different from the old Jane? What mysteries will this season reveal? This episode was intense and action-packed and a great kick-start to the season. Letting so many question be unanswered only adds to the appeal.

Other shows that have premiered this month and are still hanging in there include Castle, Shadowhunters, Major Crimes and Second Chance. Castle has been a favorite of mine but it has grown a little lack luster recently in my opinion and even though I love Nathan Filion, he needs to start taking better care of himself if he is going to keep trying to be the attractive ladies man. Beckett is still no further in lock-set but they have heated things up again by having a secret romance.
Major Crimes is doing an intense 5 episode gang wars theme to start off their season. Dirty cops, cop-killing reverends, and a whole lot more. But with so many cop dramas out right now I am not sure how much longer this one can survive as well. Second Chance is one of these new cop-shows on the scene with a science fiction twist. So far I have liked the show and its premise but not sure it can stand alone and make it past one season.

Last and probably least is Shadowhunters. I am so depressed about this show. Cassandra Clare’s book series, “The Mortal Instruments”, is one of my favorite of all-time, and even though Clare is supposedly an executive director of the tv show they just get so many things wrong. Instead of coming off edgy and mysterious, the actors and story lines are just cheesy and too much soap opera. They are changing so much of the story that I am not sure if it has anything in common with the original series at all. I am all for change and tv shows being different from their original books or inspiration but in this case I think they have just stretched it too far. There are very few redeemable characteristics for this show, as much as it breaks my heart to say that!  I don’t know what its future holds.  I hate to see it canceled, but I almost hate more for it to continue to muddy the name of its origins.

So that’s February folks. We are in full swing with Spring this next month and look forward to my “what you should be streaming” now post, for all of the great shows that you can watch back to back while you wait for your favorites to return!
