WHITNEY: The One Documentary You Should See About Whitney Houston | Review by Marcus Blake

Whitney Houston was one of the most interesting figures in music, that’s undeniable. She was also one of the most tragic. Highly regarded as the greatest singer in the world, to have thrown it all away because of drugs and alcohol abuse, makes for an interesting story. It might seem like a typical rock and roll story, but I don’t think there was anything truly typical about Whitney Houston.

The Whitney documentary is an intimate portrait of her career and life and how it spiraled out of control. I think fans will know a lot more of what happened with her star and being married to Bobby Brown and how it all came crashing down. There was a great documentary on Showtime last year and kind of Chronicled her history. I found it interesting because there was a lot that I didn’t know about her. However this documentary simply called Whitney, I think is a much better look at what happened to her because it seemed to the eyes of family and friends through interviews with them.

I admit that I have never been a huge Whitney Houston fan, but I absolutely recognize her talent. As a football fan andI like many others, pretty much agree that she gave the best performance of the national anthem than any other star during the Super Bowl. Nobody has been able to match her. And of course the song I Will Always Love You, yes Dolly Parton does a good version, but I think we can all agree that Whitney Houston’s version is out of this world and there is no comparison to Dolly Parton.

We think of stars like Whitney Houston who should have these great careers and always have chart-topping hits. We think of these people as being able to do no wrong, but the reality is the better you are the more tragic you’ll probably be. Even if you’re not really a fan, this documentary is worth checking out if nothing else is a cautionary tale for celebrities.

I think both documentaries should be watched, but this one is definitely the best because of the interviews from her family and friends. You get more of a sense of who she really was because of those interviews especially from Bobby Brown who never wanted to talk about Whitney’s drug use or his own insecurities about never being as famous as she was to where he brought her down in a lot of ways. This is a good document and I think people will walk away from it with a new insight into Whitney Houston, realizing that she was far from perfect and that maybe she didn’t always have the best environment to help her career.

When you watch this documentary, you’ll realize how truly tragic her entire life was. like I said it’s probably more of a cautionary tale for other musicians and celebrities, but it was very interesting to see everything that she dealt with and was able to still find success and how in the end it was never enough to save her. If great tragedy sparks great art then Whitney Houston is certainly the prime example of that statement. I do recommend this document or get anybody even if you’re not a fan, he’s interesting and keeps your attention.
