UglyDolls has a beautiful message! A review by Ashley Horne

With larger than life voices contributing to this movie, such as Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and Pitbull, you would think it would be hard to focus on the message of this film, but UglyDolls writers did an absolutely superb job. Every scene flowed into the next and the songs and voices just made it even more magical. UglyDolls is a movie everyone of any age would appreciate.

There are so many amazing voice actors in this film that it is so hard to choose the best one or best moment. Moxy is refreshingly optimistic, Uglydog knows how to party, but the funniest and most sarcastic is Wanda Sykes’ character, Wage. She definitely had some of the best moments and her rough, cranky exterior was opened up by the end of the movie, which was surprising and funny too. I think one of the funniest scenes is when Moxy is trying to convince her friends to explore the unknown in order to find their own child and Wage continues to tell them exactly why they shouldn’t keep exploring. Another brilliant part of UglyDolls is the soundtrack. The music was amazing! I can absolutely see children singing to that soundtrack for the next year. My daughter was dancing along the whole time. With multiple skilled singers being some of the main characters, the songs are well sung and fit the plot well. My favorite music was Pitbull’s songs, who is the voice of Uglydog. He sure knows how to party!

Even the “villain” is such a good and well written character. Nick Jonas as the antagonist was so unexpected. He was a great voice to choose for someone who you aren’t sure if you should look up to or dislike. It was almost a shock for him to be the “bad” guy. That confusion fit well into the plot. His songs and personality of playing Lou were so assured and accomplished but, also douchey and conceited that it was also hilarious and a character you enjoyed to dislike.

I would see UglyDolls in theaters now if you can, to be able to feel all the children’s happiness and excitement throughout the movie. I sat in a theater full of kids and there was only 1 meltdown. That’s a huge accomplishment that this film was able to keep the attention of all those little ones. It also keeps you dancing, smiling, hoping, and most importantly, it leaves you confident and optimistic, just like Moxy. I give UglyDolls a solid 10.
