Tony Awards: ‘Hadestown’ Wins Best Musical, Tops With 8 Wins | Complete 2019 Winners List

(from The Hollywood Reporter – www.hollywoodreporter.com)

The 73rd Annual Tony Awards were handed out Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

James Corden returned as host of the Tony Awards for the second time.

Among the night’s winners, Elaine May was named best leading actress in a play for The Waverly Gallery. In her acceptance speech, the 87-year-old noted that it marked the first major award she’d won for acting over the course of her career.

Another notable Tony nod went to Ali Stroker, who was named best actress in a featured role in a musical for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! With her win, Stroker became the first wheelchair-using Tony-winning actor in history.

Bryan Cranston, meanwhile, won best leading actor in a play honors for Network, while Santino Fontana was tapped as best leading actor in a musical for Tootsie and Stephanie J. Block was named best leading actress in a musical for The Cher Show.

Other 2019 Tony winners included Hadestown for best musical, The Ferryman for best play, The Boys in the Band for best revival of a play and Oklahoma! for best revival of a musical.

Heading into the show, Hadestown — which follows the mythical quest of Orpheus to overcome Hades — earned the most nominations, with 14. The musical won a total of eight categories it was nominated for on Sunday night, the most of all nominated shows. Coming in next was The Ferryman with four, and Tootsie, Oklahoma!, The Cher Show and Ink with two apiece.
