TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON: WILDLANDS is Fun But Not Great! | Review by Marcus Blake

Why  do I love playing the Tom Clancy  Video Game? The greatness of the Tom Clancy Video Game Series is its life like scenarios when it comes to cover warfare and small insurgencies.  You aren’t playing all out battles like in the Call of Duty series or even the battlefield series.  There is more strategy with the Tom Clancy games and just like in books strategy is what wins the war and makes the story great.  I have always felt like the Tom Clancy Games were the combination of Hitman and Call of Duty… the best of the both worlds. And for me, that’s what makes them great!

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the 43rd game in this series and let me first say that it’s not the best game of the Tom Clancy Series, but don’t think that this is a bad game. It’s a good game and worth the money. If you are a fan of the Tom Clancy series, then you will like the game and certainly want to play it. If nothing else because of the unique setting.   The Ghost Recon team will be going after the Santa Blanca Drug Cartel and in Bolivia.  How would  you go after a Drug Cartel on their own turf. The game is set in Bolivia and feels like  a futuristic setting of Clear and Present Danger.

This game is a tactical shooter in a very open world and giving us a first person shooter with a third person perspective.  And to make it better you can run your team solo or use the Co-Op feature and have your friends help you.   This also leads to what makes the game good a fun to play.  The missions are not long and you get an interesting terrain as you hunt Cartel Members in a third world country. There is a lot more stealth to the game than you might think.  But one of the great features is the sych shot feature, where you can line the enemies up and take then out with one to two shots.  It’s the perfect weapon for tactical warfare, especially in the so-called cartel land.  If you like open world tactical shooters, then this is a good one and the setting is what makes this a great game.

However, the setting is part of its downfall and why Ghost Recon: Wildlands is not a perfect game.  First: there is too much driving on narrow roads in the mountains.  While this kind  fun the first couple of times you have to do it, it got annoying really fast. It’s like playing a racing game in a shooter game and regular console controllers are not the best for driving.  While I like the open world of this game… walking or running is always the best form of transportation.   The same goes for trying to fly a helicopter in the game.  The fun is over pretty quick unless you lie that sort of thing.  Second: listening the Cartel Radio station or Podcast is very annoying. It’s funny in the beginning, but gets old really quick and becomes more distracting as you play through the game.  Ye,s you can turn it off, but it automatically comes back on every time you get into a new vehicle. It’s even more annoying that you have to keep turning it off.  I would rather listen to the Military Jokes than the cartel radio… but that’s just the Veteran in me.  When it comes to a FPS, you usually just want to zip through it without any major distractions because most of the time as a gamer, we just want to shoot things.

Overall the usual tactical strategies of the Tom Clancy games are there. They don’t deviate from the main style of those games, but just add different kinds of futuristic weapons that help a recon team.  The setting is the biggest strong suite of Ghost Recon: Wildlands.  Much like Tom Clancy’s  Division, the open world setting is fantastic.  You can play each mission again using a different strategy, which leads to more unconventional thinking because there is not just one way to win a war or succeed in a mission.  Having better weapons is great like the synch shot feature.  But what keeps this game from being perfect is too much driving and the cartel radio.  You should never want to mute a game because the dialogue is too annoying.  However,  there are more good things about this game than bad. It’s definitely a lot of fun and for fans of The Tom Clancy Video Game Series,  a welcomed addition.  I think you will have a good time playing this game.
