The Rookie: Season Finale Review by Allison Costa

The new series, “The Rookie” had its first season finale, and what a great first season it has been!  Despite the plethora of cop shows that are on television these days, “The Rookie” was still able to be a stand-out–mainly due to Nathan Fillion, but all of the cast in general has been great.  The premise for this show is a man in his 40’s deciding to go back and become a Police Officer, after a divorce and somewhat of a mid-life crisis, where he is trying to figure out his calling.  Not only does he work incredibly hard, against all of the stereotypes and negativity over his age, but he seems to have a gift for truly understanding people and being able to reach them.  A gift that other rookies do not have.

This season has shown many challenging cases and drama for our Rookie cop.  He has been investigated, after shooting a subject, and then targeted and attacked.  He was investigated over some money that went missing supposedly under his watch, as well as for his relationship with another rookie.  He has had some very hard cases, the hardest one culminating of course in the death of his Police Captain.  After a hit, or greenlight, was put out on his life by a local gang, he is kidnapped and almost killed.  But his Police Captain is with him, and she saves his life, but only by sacrificing her own.  I have to admit that this episode shocked me.  I was not expecting them to kill off her character, as she was a great character and the first person to vouch for Officer Nolan.

Since then Sarah Shahi, has been introduced as Fillion’s new love interest, and while she does not work for the Police, she does do work with the Police as a liason and the best in her field. Although he questions some of her trust and loyalty issues after their last case together–a case involving biochemicals and terrorists that has everyone in the department scared and on high alert.  The season finale seems to end on a high note–terrorists have been captured or killed, biochemicals in check, and the only Officer to be exposed, Officer Bradford, received the experimental vaccine.  So we can all breathe a sigh of relief that no one else died, right?  Wrong.  In the final few moments, right after being cleared, Officer Bradford goes down and the scene fades to black.  Will he live?  Will he die?  We are left with a cliffhanger.  And although I want to believe that they are not going to kill him off at this point in the show, they did kill off the Captain unexpectedly as well.  So its truly anyone’s guess.

If you haven’t yet checked out this show, then you definitely need to!!  It is a great show, lots of action, great characters and lots of heart.  Definitely catch up on the off-season!
