The Innocents: “Worth Checking Out” | Review by Savannah Tatum

The Innocents follows a teenage couple, June and Harry, who run away from home to escape the pressures of his family responsibilities and her overbearing father. The pair soon realizes why her father was so strict and had so many rules when a strange man, Steinar, tries to kidnap June and she discovers the ability to shapeshift. From the first episode, I fell in love with June and Harry’s relationship as it took me back to my teen years when I met my own love and her powers are still shown creatively, the overall premise of her powers being quite interesting, but It was much more of a love story or drama than I was expecting and had a few aspects I wasn’t very fond of.

I honestly felt that Harry and June’s father, John, where the best characters, because of how realistic and well-rounded they both are. For example, the first time June shifted was an extremely traumatizing experience, yet Harry handled it so well. He also didn’t react with the usual “that’s so cool” or “how did you do that”, just pure, realistic disbelief. The best part was how he still loved, protected and supported her despite her abilities and how dangerous it could be. It makes his character that much more realistic to how one would really feel in that situation. John is a great character because it gives an accurate portrayal of a loyal father. In the beginning, all you see is an overbearing father who needs to chill, and you understand June’s frustration, but as the show progresses, not only do you begin to understand his motives, you also begin to see the growth in his understanding his daughter better. On the other hand, all the characters are frustrating at times because of how much they change their minds. One-minute June will be talking about how her mom is horrible and it was awful that she hurt all those people, then tells Harry that she wants to stay and get to know her mom. Her mom does the same thing! It’s really frustrating as the viewer to not be able to know what they really want.

The overall story was fairly well-written and the actors were well-picked, especially the actor who played Steinar, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson. The fact that Jóhannes was able to accurately play a distressed, teenage girl is amazing. You could see the fear in his eyes when June had shifted into him and he played as her. It was so impressive, and I really wish they had gone into Steinars backstory more to learn about his past. He seems like such an asshole, pardon my language, but I feel there is so much more to him than what we are shown. The story itself keeps you curious enough to keep watching, but isn’t as exciting as you would think upon watching the trailer. There is a lot of drama and filler that I, personally, am just not interested in at all. The best part of the entire series was the last episode and oh was it a doozy. I don’t want to give away anything because it was really that big of a shock, but it felt like a punch to the chest watching it.

Overall, The Innocents was a pretty good show that I would recommend to those who are into more dramatic TV shows. I would rate it a six because although it wasn’t my cup of tea, it was definitely a worthy show for the right person.
