THAT NERD SHOW’S INTERVIEW SERIES: with Jason and Randy Sklar | Poop Talk Movie Review

John Winfrey

Poop Talk is a movie about perhaps the most taboo subject in nearly every society around the globe. For the most part, everyone’s going to have the same reaction when they hear there’s a movie about dropping a deuce, “not only do I know I won’t enjoy this movie, but I’m not even interested in giving it a shot.” Well, Director Aaron N. Feldman knew what he was doing by calling in hot comics who weren’t afraid to let it go.

The Sklar brothers, Randy and Jason, were enlisted to gather some guys (and even gals) that had all sorts of personal anecdotes about going #2. Comedians like Nick Swardson, Pete Holmes, Nicole Byer, and tons of others have plenty to say about something so many are afraid to mention. It’s comedy that makes this movie work. After our special screening, the Sklar brothers mention that the original direction of the movie was to be a lot more educational. No one was buying a serious movie about shit. Comedians have a special knack for pointing out the humor in everyday life and nothing is more ‘everyday’ than pooping.

When watching the comedic documentary, I found myself learning about how others poop in ways I never wanted to know, but I was still intrigued. Apparently, some people don’t poop for weeks sometimes. Ouch. It’s hard for me to rate this movie, because it’s not something you’re going to sit down and have expectations for other than being grossed out. To be honest, it’s not even really that gross. If I did have to rate it (I do.), I’m giving Poop Talk an 8. I laughed so much it hurt. I laughed hard and I didn’t go 5 minutes without laughing. Maybe that’s just the immature teenager in me.

Documentaries are always informative,  but can they really be funny! If you have one produced by two of the greatest comedians then most definitely, it can it be funny. And when you deal with a taboo subject then humor is the best way to handle it.

I had a chance to see a documentary called Poop Talk, produced by Jason and Randy Sklar. It is conversations with comedians talking about a taboo subject that always embarrassing, but doesn’t really need to be. Why, because we all poop. And better yet, we all have embarrassing stories when it comes to “shiting”

The best documentaries are the ones where you just have honest conversations with people, almost like group therapy. As I was watching this film, I have to admit, I did not stop laughing once. The conversations were too good and they were honest and refreshing. It’s like some weird psychological trust exercise. But it worked and when we talk about bowel movements, one of the most basic biological things we can do, I think you can’t help but laugh and that’s what gets his past the taboo nature of it.

I won’t say that it’s the greatest documentary ever made and it will really enlighten any of us, but it’s a very funny film and definitely helps us get over our embarrassment when it comes to pooping. And I do think it’s a documentary that people will watch more than once, if nothing else, because you want to go back and revisit the conversations with the fabulous comedians that are in the film.  It’s a good solid 8 for me.
