TAG Review by Alex Thomas

TAG is a blast of fun moving at break-neck speeds. In this movie, you follow a group of friends who for the past 30 years annually get together to play a game of tag. When their friend Jerry says he is retiring from the game, the guys get back together to finally tag him after all these years. The catch is, Jerry is a master of the game, so the idea of catching him is easier said than done.

While watching Tag, you see what makes comedy films from this current era vary in quality. It’s quite a mixed bag nowadays with what movies actually try, and which just lazily slap on an actor and a script. This easily could have been a phoned-in movie, that used its cast as a crutch to move decent numbers. But what impressed me so much with this movie was its great editing, writing, stunts, and acting. On all fronts, it was handled with care. It understood what it was, and was crafted well.

This movie would not have worked without a great ensemble of characters. The chemistry between Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Jeremy Renner, John Hamm, Isla Fisher, and Jake Johnson is infectious. The off-the-cuff comments of Hannibal Buress, in particular, are very funny. Also a shout out to Isla Fisher, who plays the insane but hilarious wife of Ed Helms. Every actor brings their own flavor to the table, and that makes the dialogue fun, adding a little something for everyone.

When gauging if you want to see this movie, do not expect a ground-breaking film. But, if you want a jam-packed fun romp with some lifelong friends, this is the movie for you. All that being said, I had a couple of small issues. Some minor critiques involve the pacing of the film, and that some jokes don’t land completely. There is also a small plotline that revolves around a love triangle that doesn’t get resolved as much as I would have liked.  That should not detract you from wanting to see it though. This stands out for me more than most of the quickly thrown together comedies so far this year.
