“Studio 666” Film Review by Marcus Blake

Who doesn’t love the Foo fighters? And who wouldn’t watch a horror-comedy movie made by the Foo Fighters? Well, I think they decided to test that theory when as a band, they made the movie Studio 666, a delightful romp about the band making its 10th album and having to deal with their lead singer being possessed by the devil. Is that comedy gold, maybe! But, if nothing else, it’s highly entertaining! I will admit that I enjoyed the movie more than I probably should Maybe, I am a little biased because I am a Foo Fighters fan, but come on, Dave Grohl is just awesome and if he wants to do a horror-comedy movie then you know it’s going to at least be somewhat, decent, and I can definitely say that about Studio 666. It’s not a great movie and certainly not the best horror-comedy movie out there, but much like Jack Black’s Tenacious D: The Pic of Destiny, it will make you laugh, and that I certainly did, more than I probably should have.

The story is about the Foo Fighters trying to make their 10th album and going to a somewhat famous house to record it, where a band nearly 30 years before tried to do the same thing and were taken over by evil spirits or the devil, which led to one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written. The problem is, it’s through this song that the spirit of the devil will be released. Yes, it sounds ridiculous, however, is it any more ridiculous than the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil so he could be one of the greatest blues-guitarist in history? Is it any more ridiculous believing that Stevie Via could be the devil with his guitar playing as he so eloquently demonstrated in the movie Crossroads with Ralph Macchio.

But sometimes the most ridiculous makes for the greatest comedy. Hey, there’s a great horror-comedy movie called Cooties where something in the Chicken McNuggets turn children into zombies… now, that’s ridiculous, but that movie is absolutely hilarious. What makes this movie work and worth watching is the fact that Dave Grohl has a knack for comedy, maybe it’s just natural because he has such an energetic personality. But also, the rest of the band members were quite hilarious. I have to say that they did a really good job lampooning themselves in this movie. It’s not a very good story, but what makes the movie worth watching is the fact that the band was actually pretty good actors in the film. Of course, we can say that Whitney Cummings, who plays the nosy neighbor steals the movie, she is very funny, but it’s the band that really steals the show. It’s obvious that they didn’t write their own jokes, but their delivery was superb. I imagine that they treated it like one big party and just had a good time making a movie which made it more natural. But I was pleasantly surprised by how good they were. And I also have to give the filmmakers credit for using as many practical effects as they could for the horror aspect of the film.

Studio 666 is not really a good movie, it’s a stupid comedy, but sometimes they do make for fun movies. Is Happy Gilmore that good of a movie, no, but we laugh because it’s so outrageously stupid that it can’t help but make us laugh. The movie Dumb and Dumber is another good example. There were times watching this movie that I felt like the band was just shooting footage of them trying to make their 10th album and goofing around and that’s how they created the story for this movie. However, I’ve certainly seen worst movies where they clearly put some thought into the story and it just backfired. Sometimes the movie has a hard time figuring out whether it really wants to be a horror movie or a comedy. There were elements to the story that would have been perfect for a really scary horror film and seemed kind of wasted in a horror-comedy, but again, I give credit to the filmmakers for making it look like a realistic horror film. Overall, Studio 666 is just a fun dumb rock and roll horror-comedy with a band that we can all enjoy who wanted to make a film just for the hell of it. And that’s a good enough reason to make this movie. It’s not going to win any awards and it may not even produce a really good soundtrack, but it may be that one-timer you need to make your day a little bit better. And props to the band for having a good time and making fun of themselves, which just endears them more to the fans. The best performances are by Whitney Cummings and Jeff Garlin and even Will Forte, who are the legitimate actors in the film. However, Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters did a great job and should be commended for it. They did a far better job in this movie than the Ramones did portraying themselves in the cult favorite Rock and Roll High School. The only thing good about that movie was the music because the Ramones were shitty actors, but they wrote great music and you can’t be perfect at everything. So, should you check out Studio 666, yes! Maybe it’s not worth seeing in the theater, but even if you’re not a fan of the Foo Fighters and just like horror-comedy movies, it’s entertaining enough to rent and watch at home with really good drinks! I certainly laughed more than I probably should that alone makes this inadequate enough film to watch… Who knows, maybe I’ll watch it again sometime and it will be more than just a one-timer.
