PS5 backwards compatibility will run “almost all” PS4 games, says Ubisoft CEO

Ubisoft has confirmed that next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X, will feature almost complete backwards compatibility with their predecessors when they release in the Holiday season later this year.

Speaking on a financial call last week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, when asked about next-gen, revealed that the upcoming “consoles will be running almost all the back catalog of the previous consoles.”

“It will be something new in the industry.” continued Guillemot, explaining that backwards compatibility “will help the old generations to continue to be big consoles on the market for years to come.”

While we knew both next-gen systems would be backwards compatible, Sony has been less upfront than Microsoft about how extensive this PS5 feature will be, so to hear Ubisoft acknowledge that the majority of PS4 games can be played on its successor is reassuring news.

The Xbox One, of course, already has a comprehensive backwards compatibility program, while Microsoft itself has confirmed the Xbox Series X won’t be receiving any next-gen exclusives for the first few years of its life cycle. On the other side of the fence, we already have one confirmed upcoming PS5 gameGodfall, and it’s looking rather mighty.

In the same conference call, Ubisoft also stated it would be releasing three AAA games this year, though stopped short on clarifying which ones. While both Watch Dogs Legion and Gods & Monsters are expected, rumours of a new Assassin’s Creed game continue to swirl. One to watch out for as we get closer to E3 2020…
