“Pieces of Her” Review by Danielle Butler | WHAT YOU SHOULD BINGE WATCH

“Pieces of Her” is another mystery thriller series on Netflix, that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And it’s another great series with Toni Collete.   In the aftermath of a violent attack, Andy Oliver (Bella Heathcote), an artist who works as 911 Call Center operator discovers her mother (played by Tony Collete) is not who she thinks she is as her past begins to bleed into their quiet life. Shortly following media coverage of the horrible incident Laura Oliver and her daughter Andy find themselves under attack again. Under her mother’s advice, Andy goes on the run to Maine in search of refuge. What she found is answers including the identity of her mother Laura, whose given name Jane Queller the daughter of a wealthy businessman.

This story is thriller drama series (the action scenes are graphic/violent) created by Charlotte Stoudt, based off Karin Slaughter’s book. This story is captivating, mysterious, tumultuous, and thrilling telling of a woman and her daughter’s deeply complicated past unravel reveling tragic details of Andy and her mom are being chased. The characters in this series are all driven by different desires which drive the plot.  I appreciated the flashbacks in the why they were woven into the current events of the story.

The music in this series was incredible. Especially the instrumentals. I was completely drawn in by the performances of Tony Collete and Jessica Barden. The character Jane is so layered with trauma, motives, and choices. When Jane plays the piano, it gets to me. From losing her mother to her controlling abusive father to her own relationship with her daughter as she pulls away. This story is complex. It is not something you can have running in the background while you do other things. If you do, you’ll miss things and must rewind. I believe certain characters were meant to throw off the audience but didn’t. In my opinion, nothing was too unpredictable.

Like many mother daughter storylines, there was push and pull and butting heads. What I liked about this series and the ebb and flow of these women’s relationship is all the little moments from the past that explain who these characters are and why they behave like they do. Another shout out to Tony Collete and Bella Heathcote for portraying these strong emotions so poignantly.

This was a good series. Not only were there action scenes and mystery but the character development for this show raised the stakes and created more tension between characters. I would not watch this series more than one; however, I recommend getting cozy before starting this show. Get your snacks, pillows, and blankets etc. because you’ll won’t want to miss a thing. “Pieces of Her” is a puzzle of sharp and edgy truths of how Jane Quiller became Laura Oliver and this woman and her daughter fight for themselves. I would rate this a 8 because the backstory kept me on my toes. Check it out today, you won’t be disappointed.
