Ocean’s 8 Review by Alex Thomas

Ocean’s 8 throws you back into the fast-paced life of crime established by the previous Oceans films. With a great ensemble cast, this movie succeeded in keeping me interested in the unraveling spool of tricks it has to offer.

Led by Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), a specialized team of women plots to steal Cartier’s $150 million dollar necklace during the Met Gala. Then accompanied by a star-studded cast, we see vibrant and fun personalities plot out one of the world’s biggest heists.

From the opening moments to the final seconds, this movie is working to explain an elaborate plot. A typical issue with so many heist films is that the plot breaks down and leaves a lot of questions. This movie makes it very clear where the next move is, but hides the surprises to the best moments. A small complaint is that it holds your hand a bit near the end, which isn’t necessary. Aside from that, I had a smile on my face the majority of the time. It was refreshing to see an all female-led film, which showcased the individual strength of each woman in a non-pushy or heavy-handed way.

Anne Hathaway does a great job playing as the ditsy Daphne Kluger and is a standout in the ensemble cast. Everyone holds their own, and everyone has great chemistry. Sandra Bullock is a solid anchor to the cast and does a great job channeling all of her older action and spy films from her career to really stick the landing in this movie. Cate Blanchett plays the moody Lou, Debbie’s friend and partner in crime. There really aren’t any roles that weaken or hurt the film at all.

The cinematography is sleek and clean, with interesting and fun shots to mix it up. Some transitions and stylistic editing choices don’t work as well as intended. There are great scenes that really accentuate the jewelry and clothing that this movie capitalizes on.

Overall, Oceans 8 works as the perfect heist film for a girls night out. It has such universal charm and appeals that anyone can enjoy it. It executed very well what it set out to do, and I highly recommend it if you are a can of the genre.
