Nintendo Direct: 3.8.18 Reaction

Nintendo dropped another Direct on us today and gave us a look at some big and some not-so-big titles coming to 3DS and the Switch in 2018.

Some of the notable releases are ports from other systems, as is the trend among gaming studios. Sadly, it’s working and selling so we are stuck with games that already exist. I will say, however, that some of these ports are welcome, even if I’m just bitter that I already own some of them and would rather have them on the Switch.

The two main ports that are sure to be fan favorites are the Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy and South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Both are great games that will be perfect for the mobile Switch system. Taking these games on-the-go with players will be a huge selling point. The addition of adult titles on the Switch vastly broadens the audience that Nintendo can reach. If I didn’t already own South Park, this would be a no-brainer buy for me. It’s graphics will translate well and the gameplay is simple enough for the Switch to handle. Bandicoot performed well when released last year and should continue to sell well with a Nintendo port release.

Nintendo took special time to focus on a brand new release coming June 22 Mario Tennis Aces. That’s been a successful franchise for the company through the years and surely won’t disappoint with style of gameplay Switch provides. Multiple new swings and special abilities are available and will be mixed in with motion controls through Joy-Cons.

The biggest news from today’s Direct will be the real “internet breaking” announcement of a Super Smash Bros. release coming this year. It’s unclear yet whether it will be a port from the Wii U console or a brand new release. The teaser was vague but revealed two new fighters on the roster, inklings from Splatoon 2 and Breath of the Wild’s Link. Smash Bros. is Nintendo’s end-all be-all for fighters. Fans are excited and eager to learn more, which will likely happen at E3 this summer.
