John Wick 3 | Review by Alex Thomas

John Wick 3: Parabellum is a continuation into the mythos of the franchise that shows no signs of stopping. Keanu Reeves is back and feisty as ever in this new installment.

While John Wick is always fun to watch, this one had me concerned. The action in this film was some of the best while also being some of the worst in the entire franchise. Keanu Reeves really showcases that he still has the ability to kick butt in this film.

I was really hoping that this John Wick film was going to be a great conclusion to the franchise. The second installment was a fun ride but I was ready for the finale which was supposed to be this film. I was concerned at about 20 minutes left in the film when I realized they were not going to wrap this up. This franchise always seems to not overstay it’s welcome from movie to movie, but this tested the limits of the moviegoer by creating another middle film and not a conclusion.

Most of the sequences in this film are awesome. There are so many great uses of choreography that blew me away. The starting and ending scenes are powerful and gritty, but the middle feels a bit fluffy. Certain scenes seem more rushed than other scenes and the illusion of the sequence is destroyed at certain times. For instance, whenever Halle Berry is fighting, you can clearly see the choreography more than the natural fighting itself. Honestly, the entire sequence in Casablanca is very rehearsed and not genuine looking. It was one of the only moments in the film where I was completely thrown out of it.

Asia Kate Dillon who plays the Adjudicator is a sore spot in the film as well. As someone who plays a menacing leader, she doesn’t deliver in terms of ominous evil. Her acting is very weak as well, which is tough up against Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves. I thoroughly enjoyed the constant enemy played by Mark Dacascos, who is an admirer of John Wick that is also sworn to kill him. The banter that he shares with Mr. Wick is well written and enjoyable.

If you are a diehard fan of the John Wick series, absolutely go and see this. This is a great movie-going experience, but don’t fully expect a masterpiece. It’s hard to rank this movie because I firmly believe it has some of the best moments in any John Wick film. At the exact same time, it also has some of the worst moments. My only hope with these films is that they don’t overstay their welcome and that Mr. Wick finally gets the peace he deserves.
