Joel Silver’s remake of Escape from New York is apparently still going ahead, albeit very slowly.
Back in March of last year, we reported that Silver wants to turn John Carpenter’s ’80s sci fi classic into a trilogy, starting with the origin story of hero Snake Plissken. In a new interview with Collider, Silver has expanded on that vision further.
“I always liked Kurt’s character,” Silver explained. “The Snake Plissken character, so I’ve always liked that idea, but we kind of figured out a way to do almost a trilogy of that story.
“There was a video game that came out a few years ago called [Batman] Arkham City, which shows how Gotham became this kind of walled prison… they never deal with that in the story of Escape From New York, so [that is] part of our story.”
The inspiration makes sense, considering Carpenter’s ’81 original took place in a Manhattan already well established as a base for the twisted and criminally insane. And while this idea might lend itself more to a ‘re-imagining’ rather than a ‘remake,’ Silver states that he still has plans to incorporate the original’s story-line into his trilogy.
“And then, in the middle of the story, would be the movie that we, you know, previously saw about the President’s daughter goes down, he has to go in and get her. And then, you know, they did a sequel, Escape from LA, but I would like to then kind of find a way to have New York go back to a place that we’d like to see what it is today.

It’s extremely early days on the remake yet, however, and the script is far from completion.
“So there is a way to tell the story in three ways, but we haven’t got there yet and we’re just starting.”
