Is Everything Awesome? Review of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part by Ashley Horne

In The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part we see the Lego world’s new life after years of being introduced to a new enemy: Lego Duplo, the little sister’s creations! The first Lego movie had the main theme of believing in oneself and the second has the message of teamwork. Do Emmet and his friends have what it takes to take down another villain and is this movie better than the first one?

We finally meet the ruler of this new, colorful, sister-controlled world. She is Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (voiced by Tiffany Haddish). This new entity and entirely different world is a major part of the film. I believe this made it more focused to a younger audience. Even though the little boy was about the same age as the sister in the first film, this was definitely more innocent and childlike. It was still a hilarious movie, just like the first, but the humor is sillier. There are pieces of humor throughout that are geared towards the older viewers, which reminded me of the hilarity of the first film and had me deep-belly laughing at times.

Tiffany Haddish did a fine job being the girl’s main character from the Lego Duplo world but I didn’t think she added much to the character and her voice felt a little out of place for that role. She usually does very adult-based humor and I felt like they didn’t really write her character to be all that funny. Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi is meant to be confusing. Is she evil or is she good? Haddish’s vocal acting didn’t fit the part of a little girl’s lego piece and it didn’t suit her message of ambiguity.

There’s also another new character introduced to us besides the queen and that’s the tough, rugged, super manly man Rex Dangervest! He’s the opposite of Emmet’s sensitive yet simple mindset. He’s the perfect advisor for him to take down his target, who might be trying to rule everyone. Rex is a loner and his method of time travel and sense of humor are hilarious. His macho quality playing off of Emmet’s lighthearted and open traits make for a funny duo to watch. This leads to one of my favorite scenes of the movie where Emmet asks Rex to explain how he traveled in time to help save everyone. He states that he used a combination of other people’s methods such a the Delorean, the Tardis, and Skynet to name a few! I imagine that inclusion wasn’t for the children watching as it was a hilarious nod to some of the adult’s favorite Sci-Fi items. It had all of the parents laughing.

Overall, I would say this sequel was a pretty awesome, mostly unpredictable, and heartwarming film, which are some spot on qualities of a good follow up flick. It was cute and funny! Emmet is still the man in this sequel and I love that, but I would have put someone like Rebel Wilson in the role of the queen and made the script more sarcastic. I’d grade The Lego Movie 2 a 7
