GameStop’s new used game rental service has been suspended.
The video game retailer provided IGN with the following statement:
“We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service.”
According to Kotaku, two GameStop employees told the outlet that the retailer has informed staff that all signs about the PowerPass program should be pulled down. Employees speculate the new rental service was suspended because the company’s outdated computer system isn’t capable of handling the new program.
As reported last week, PowerPass is an unlimited used game rental service that, for $60, lets subscribers rent a used game, return it, and then rent another title as often as they’d like over a six-month period. Once the six months is up, the customer will be able to select one of the games they rented to keep.
