Funny, Wild, and Full of Frenemies : The Angry Birds Movie 2 – A review by Ashley Horne

The Angry Birds Movie 2 was continuously hilarious and at the same time, such a good story of unity. This time around there’s more to worry about than just pigs. In fact, the birds and pigs must team up to fight a new mutual enemy: The Eagles! We meet one main villain, Zeta, a purple eagle voiced by Leslie Jones. She’s an evil leader who wants to take out both Bird Island and Pig Island. This causes chaos and confusion, which results in frenemies between the Birds and Pigs!

We not only are introduced to a new villain, but also to some new characters. One of my favorites is Silver, Chuck’s well-educated, engineer sister. Her character paired against Red’s was perfect because she’s the smart, new girl trying to figure everything out, including him! He’s an irritated, stubborn, go-getter guy just trying to save the Birds. Her intelligent, calculated approaches to their problems in this movie were so cute and a good addition this time around.

Another addition to this movie were the baby birds! The eggs we worried about in the first film are now baby birds and they were definitely my favorite part of the movie. They aren’t extremely prominent but they are super cute, have very quick, funny moments. They even end up being a crucial part in saving both islands!

If I had to choose something I would have done differently I would have had Red give more input to ideas, but I understand his story line was to fear being forgotten or worse, hated again. It did add to his pig-headedness trait to not want to work on ideas with the team, or should i say bird-headedness? He insisted on simply commanding them around. Also, the humor was almost too adult for me to be comfortable with children watching it. My daughter loved the first one, and we enjoyed watching it together, but I would wait until she was about 10 for me to OK this sequel for her eyes. There were SO many butt jokes! I can see tweens enjoying it most but no one under that age should really watch it. The jokes are too obvious and too often to be passed off as appropriate, even though it is still rated PG.

I’d give The Angry Birds Movie 2 an 8. It was hilarious and the speed of the action, humor, and plot points were extremely well paced. There wasn’t a boring moment. It’s just almost too raunchy in humor to be a children’s movie. I’m telling y’all, they really went wild with the butt jokes. I would’ve also liked Red to at least have a couple more happy moments in the film but he developed his arch better. This time he became a more well-rounded character after having to work with his team to figure everything out and others taking the lead, instead of him being the main hero. Enemies navigated teamwork, becoming “frenemies”, and it was all sidesplitting.
