Deadpool Film Review by Marcus Blake & Brendan Smith

The Deadpool movie is definitely the Deadpool movie we have been waiting for.  Everything we hated about his appearance in the Wolverine Origins move was fixed. Simple as that! And Ryan Reynolds found his perfect superhero role! It’s easy to forget that he was Green Lantern. Sorry to remind you Nerds, but his performance as Deadpool, more than makes us for it.  Simply put, this movie was great! It’s not perfect, but I have yet to see a superhero that really us perfect.  This movie comes close and it’s the movie it’s supposed to be. There’s not a well round plot filled with great drama that make the essence of an allegory. No, the Deadpool movie is a simple revenge tale mixed with a love story where the hero gets the girl in the end.   This is probably why I can’t give the move a perfect 10. But then again The Princess Bride is the same kind of story and while it’s not perfect, it too is still a great move.

What makes this movie great is the fact that we get the Deadpool from the comics and that’s what we are supposed to have with a superhero movie…not a movie from meddling studios, directors, and screenwriters who have never read the comics.  The Deadpool movie is a love letter to the fans. And I would go as far as to say that this move was perfectly cast as stated by the opening credits…go see the movie and you will find out what I mean.  Now I can spend time giving away the plot, but I am not a dick like Wade Wilson and won’t do that. You just have to go see the movie!  While the Ryan Reynolds shines in the movie, Firefly Alum, Morena Baccarin is fantastic in the movie and sends her sex appeal into overdrive within the film.  But more importantly, she can match wits with Ryan Reynolds and their chemistry explodes off the screen….another good thing for nerds who will flock to this movie.

The Deadpool movie is an outrageously fun movie. It’s worth the $15.00 movie ticket.  You have great wisecracks, fantastic action scenes, and a great soundtrack! Just like with Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool had the perfect nostalgic soundtrack and the right soundtrack can make or break any movie.  Fortunately it didn’t for Deadpool. I won’t say that the movie is perfect, but pretty close, if nothing else just for the amount of fun I had when seeing it.  But it is the Deadpool movie that needed to be made and the team behind it did an outstanding job.  My only complaint is that there could have been more to the story, but that’s for the sequels, right!

The Good: Well, they got Deadpool right for starters. Ever since I saw Blade Trinity I’ve thought, “Damn, that dude should play Deadpool someday.” I never thought it would actually happen, but I’m soooooo very happy it did. Reynolds delivers zinger after zinger, all while managing to be incredibly emotive in a full body suit for 90% of the movie. Hat tip to the CGI team there for being able to accent and add to that perfomance without being overbearing.

The action: Quite simply, was fantastic. It was brutal, raw, and effortless, with amazing banter and fourth wall breaking asides thrown in. Whether counting down how many bullets he had, spelling something out for the villain, or wondering if he left the stove on, everything felt like a Deadpool comic jumped off the pages and on to the screen.

The supporting cast: Weasel (T.J. Miller) and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) were fantastic and who can forget the lovely Morena Baccaran as Wade Wilson’s future baby momma, Vanessa. We finally got to see Colossus be Colussus and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand aquitted hereself quite well. She has a bit of an angry younger sister thing going on with Deadpool and it works.

They took shots at everything. The fourth wall wasn’t just broken in this movie, they went Kool-Aid man through it. In one case, damn near broke the space-time continuum with an exponential wall break. No, I can’t explain. You’ll have to go watch.

The Not So Good:

Normally, I sad, “The Bad” but there wasn’t much bad. All the best lines are not in the trailer, so don’t worry there. What fell a little short was at times, the pacing felt a little off. I’m betting there is an unrated director’s cut coming that corrects this issue though. Also, the story was a bit rudimentary. It was a straightforward revenge tail. And while there is nothing inherently wrong with that, it does prevent me from giving the film a perfect score.

Now, hurry up and go see the movie before you have to tell the police where on the doll Deadpool hurt you.
