“Black Widow” Film Review by Julie Jones

So, Black Widow finally came out! We finally got her origin story even if it was a few years too late. To be honest,   I was never really a fan of Black Widow. Don’t get me wrong, she wasn’t a bad character. But, I thought that a lot of the character was sex appeal and not enough foundation. Sure, she was great to have in combat and was a trained assassin, but it didn’t feel like she was as tough and complex as the other characters…at least to me. I know, I’m a traitor to my sex.  But, Black Widow was always good in a fight.  The Black Widow is a film that actually takes place at the end of Captain America: Civil War when she goes on the run.  But it also ends after Endgame, at least the post credit scene does.  This film tells us more about Natasha and her origin story. You will find familiar faces like David Harbor, Rachel Weisz and Florence Pugh constructing a story that anyone with a family can relate to. I mean, I’m not saying I cried…but it can hit a few chords as it would with most people. We not only get to find out more about how she grew up, but the family she grew up with. Finally, we get to see where she came from.

The acting isn’t anything to be amazed by, but it’s an action film. And for a Marvel movie, the acting was pretty good. The list of cast members alone should give you a hint of what you can expect. It won’t win Oscars, but it’s better than porn acting…and isn’t that really all we want, anymore? Action movies have their place and can be a lot fun even in the form of a superhero movie! There is nothing exceptional about the film direction or cinematography. And I just want to say this: if I see flares in one more film, I’m going to burn Panavision to embers, myself. Let it go, guys. It was a cheap trick at best when JJ. Abrams used it in Star Trek and its less than a whoopie cushion now.  Marvel movies should be better…after all, they are Marvel Movies and definitely better than J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies.

The story was pretty good and I was delighted by the quality of dialogue. Not all Marvel movies have had that… didn’t we all see Thor: the Dark World. There were some funny moments that didn’t feel forced and I really enjoyed those moments in the writing.  Black widow was better than expected.  We all wanted a Black Widow movie and again, to be honest,  I didn’t expect much from it compared to other origin stories. Overall, I thought it was a good movie. I didn’t think it was amazing, but I would watch it again because if nothing else,  it’s a fund movie.  I think it’s worth the matinee admission price, but not that ridiculous $30 fee that Disney wants to charge you. Wait until it’s free.  I loved Yelena’s character and thought it was a great way to put a softer side to the characters without some sappy love interest. I would give this movie a nine, but only because I can’t give it an 8.5 and 8 seems a little less than it deserves and most Marvel movies are usually an 8 anyway!
