A Guy’s Review of “Like a Boss” by Marcus Blake

I’m a guy and I’m going to review a chick flick. I know what you’re thinking, what could possibly go wrong? But then again this could be the most honest review you’ve ever gotten about a chick flick. I had the pleasure of seeing Like a Boss with a friend of mine… No, it was not a date, but here we were watching what is basically a chick flick. And yes, I admit, an action movie would have been much better. But that doesn’t mean that Like a Boss Is a bad movie. It may not be a great movie, but I did laugh a few times. In my experience with this movie is nowhere near the experience of taking a girlfriend to see Sex in the City 2 a decade of go and sitting through the movie hoping that I would get laid for being a good boyfriend by taking her to a crappy movie that she wanted to see. No my experience was not that bad with this film.

It’s true, I’m not the demographic for this particular movie. Like a Boss is a film for women and their girlfriends to get together, drink wine, forget about men, and just laugh.  I don’t know if I would even call it a good date movie, but it is definitely a girlfriend’s movie. That’s a good thing. At least this movie knows its target demographic and isn’t trying to be something it’s not. I appreciate that. And I can at least give it a few more points for being honest regarding its audience. The movie is not terrible. And it’s probably only a One-timer and if you see it again, it’ll probably be when it’s free on cable to be quite honest or free on some streaming service. But what I do like about this is the hilarious performances by Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek. All of them were great. I never thought of Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish doing a movie together, but somehow it works. However, the performance that really steals the movie is by Billy Porter. His performance reminded me a lot of Nathan Lane in The Birdcage. He made me laugh the most.

Like a Boss is predictable. You already know that you’re going to have two friends with a strong bond end up fighting and quitting on each other only to realize their true purpose, makeup, and make something better… In this case a business. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the performances and if you’re a huge fan of Tiffany Haddish, this may be a typical role for her, but she’s great and will make you laugh. Also, Jennifer Coolidge steals a lot of scenes in a movie, but we shouldn’t be too surprised because she’s a great comedic actress.

So this is what I would say, if your woman I like to get together with your girlfriends and go see a movie… This one will do just fine and wine will make it even better. It’s a “galpal” movie just like guys getting together to see the next fast and furious movie or another Die Hard movie. As I said before, I appreciate that they know exactly who their audiences and isn’t trying to fake it to bring in a wider audience. It’s not worth the price of a full movie ticket, but it’s worth it when you see it with friends and have good wine or cocktails to go along with it. That’s how you’re meant to see this movie. And if you can’t do it at the theater and it’s worth running at Redbox and having a girls night out with a few bottles of wine… Even if you just see it once, you’ll still laugh and it’ll be worth it and Like a Boss Doesn’t have to be any better than that. Besides, this movie could have been so much worse.
