“80 for Brady” Film Review by Marcus Blake

Tom Brady may be the greatest quarterback in pro football. There really isn’t any debate about that, but that doesn’t mean he’s a good actor or even making a movie about one of his Super Bowl victories is as good as his career. 80 for Brady is one of those bad movies that you can’t help but love. It’s cheesy, it’s not going to win any Oscars, and the best description I can give the film is, what if the Golden Girls made a Hallmark movie about football? With that said, it’s still a movie worth checking out not because Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski play themselves, but you have four legendary actresses who make this movie better than it should be. Make no mistake about it, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno make this movie worth watching. The story centers around four older women who love Tom Brady and Patriots football, and when one of them discovers she has cancer again, they have one last adventure going to the last Super Bowl Tom Brady played in with the New England Patriots. It’s the one where he led the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history being down by 25 points against the Atlanta Falcons and winning the Super Bowl in overtime. The cheesiness of the movie is seen in how these four women inspired Tom Brady and the Patriots comeback. Yes, it’s fictional, but still funny.

It’s easy to make golden girl references because that’s basically what the main characters are and each one of these great actresses has a great comedic background especially Lily Tomlin. If you’re a fan of the old Golden Girls TV show, then you’ll love this movie, because there are a lot of nice references to the show and that age group without being demeaning. But you also get a nice backstory of how these characters are actually based on real women, and how they came to love Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. It’s a heartwarming story about how they became super fans and would get together every Sunday to watch football. You don’t usually hear that kind of story regarding women, but it works. Each one of the characters has their own unique personality, you have the slutty character played by Jane Fonda, you have the high stakes gambler played by Rita Moreno, and you have the quiet nerdy character who boils everything down to math since she is a former math professor. Basically, you’re watching a movie about what if your grandmother got into trouble at the Super Bowl. And of course, the story is predictable, we know what happens even if they fudge the facts about how Tom Brady was inspired to make the miraculous comeback, it doesn’t matter because it’s a heartwarming story with a lot of funny antidotes and great performances by four legendary actresses.

Now like I said it’s not a great movie, but it’s a funny movie and you’ll enjoy it even if you only watch it once. Rob Gronkowski is kind of a funny actor, and Tom Brady is not really that good, but does hold his own playing himself with the four leads even if his facial expressions make it seem like he’s trying too hard to be a good actor. But the thing about Tom Brady is, he doesn’t have to be good. To be honest, he and Rob Gronkowski are the worst parts of this movie, but that’s okay because the film has really great highlights from that Super Bowl to wear as an audience member it’s like you’re reliving that all over again. If you’re a football fan, especially a Patriots fan you’ll enjoy that aspect of the film because it’ll make you remember the greatest comeback in Patriots history. If you’re not really a football fan, you’ll just enjoy some funny performances by four great actresses who make this movie better than it should be. And let’s be honest, if you put Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno in a movie together, they’re instantly going to make the story better even if the premise is kind of stupid. Although, that’s not really the case here because with it being based on a real story, its heartwarming in a Hallmark sort of way. I won’t say that you should run out to the theater to see this film, but once it’s available for rent, it’s worth a few bucks and you’ll get your money’s worth. It’s kind of like oceans 13, you’re not watching the movie for the story, you’re watching it for all the great performances by the fantastic cast that was assembled to make the movie. Sometimes that’s all you really need in order to be entertained and I was certainly entertained by this movie.
