Meghan Shepherd’s THE CAGE Review by Bekah Stepanian

I’ve never read Megan Shepherds first series, however book one is sitting in my TBR shelf, but I received an ARC of The Cage at TLA and decided to give it a crack. Going into it I wasn’t expecting anything since I don’t have prior knowledge of Megan Shepherds writing style, but her series is popular and I once heard the book was to be made into a movie, so I assumed it be high quality stuff. Throughout the first couple of chapters I was nothing more than a bit confused. Not that the story itself was confusing, the plot is rather simple, but the reader is literally thrown directly into the story with characters who have those instant feelings for each other.  Sort of.  It’s hard to explain, but I just didn’t like the way it seemed they had already developed some connections and feelings amongst each other when they had never met. No matter if their paths had sort of crossed before. And I’m just not a huge fan of any of that insta-crap. It doesn’t flow right. Unless you’re writing a contemporary ROMANCE (and even then it doesn’t always work) then don’t do that. Also, fifty paged in the plot was a little on the boring side, the suspense was only halfway there for me, and the story was very flat and simple. Right to the point, no stalling, very fast-paced, which is always a plus for these kinds of books. Makes for a quick read. However, I felt like there needed to be something else.

In addition, I don’t always love the multiple points of view, omniscient. I can take between 1-3 people’s perspectives. But not more than that. In particular this story. I’m not sure why, I just felt like being open to that many people’s minds and it being written in third person took away from the emotional aspects of the book. Especially since there are very emotional set characters in the book, it just too away from them too much. It either needed to be from one POV or written in first person. Or both.
In the end I put the book up because it was incredibly boring. I’m quite surprise since as far as I’ve heard Megan Shepherd’s other series is fantastic.
