Wolverine and the X-Men are Back…and Better Than Ever – Why you should see X-MEN: Days of Future Past by Daniel Granat

Ever since X-men: The Last Stand, Wolverine and the gang  haven’t really been the astonishing team that we have known and loved in the comic books (not including  X-Men: First Class) Yet, just like in the new movie, everything changed after X-Men DOFP. Bryan Singer gets his act together and makes a movie that will change the future for the X-Men, and its franchise.

Let’s be honest, for the last couple of years, X-men became more like X-Man, with choosing to always cast Hugh Jackman in  the leading role. Although many fans were not happy with this, it felt almost essential to make The Wolverine, or at least it’s after credit scene where Professor Xavier and Magneto come to Wolverine for assistance. And Bingo…that is where X-Men: Days of Future Past kicks off…sort of?

The film opens with the world, practically coming to an end, while we see Sentinels (Giant robots) killing off mutants. While it seems as if we are watching what would be the end to the X-Men, turns out to be a huge adventure…..THORUGH TIME AND SPACCCCCEEE!

Overall, without giving too much away, Kitty (Ellen Page) informs the X-men/audience that she can now send people back in time, about a few days to a week, giving the X-men a chance to continuously fight back. Yet, when Professor Xavier (Patrick Stuart) explains how this all came to be, and how to solve the situation, it results in having to send someone back in time, about 50 years back! But whose body can withstand the time-travel without dying…yep, Hugh Jackman- I mean Wolverine!

Wolverine’s mission now is to convince Professor X’s younger self (James McAvoy) to help stop Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from committing an action, which caused the end of mutants.

In X-Men :DOFP, everyone’s favorite mutant is in (except for Nightcrawler  “sniff, sniff”) from both Beasts (past and future),Storm (Halle Barry),Rouge, Iceman, Pyro, Wolverine and the X-Men  are back…and better than ever,  and even Toad!

DOFP has this amazing way of mixing  laugh out loud scenes in one moment then jumping to suspense in a heartbeat. One of the many challenges I feel that Bryan Singer had to work with, was making the X-men franchise going back to being about a team, rather than a specific member. In which case, DOFP was brilliant, I walked out of the theater feeling that every character had their fair share of screen time, on a scale of how important they affected the story.

Of course, being a superhero film, the good guy always wins at the end of the day. And in DOFP’s case, it ends in an almost it’s a wonderful life-esqie  form. Don’t worry, I’m not going  to ruin it! Yet, I applaud the movie in ending in such a generic/rehashed idea, while still keeping it original and perfect for how the film should end.

“X-men Days of Future Past” opens a whole new beginning to the franchise. It backtracks in the case of the last few movies, and puts viewers back in a more comfortable position we were in before X-Men: The Last Stand.

Overall, just like Wolverine saved the world in DOFP, DOFP saved the franchise from ending in a huge apocalyptic mess.
