“Why you should watch Alex Rider!” Season 3 Review by Allison Costa

Alex Rider just dropped its third season and this series has really grown on me.  Available on both Freevee and Prime Video, it tells the story of an average high school kid who finds out his entire life and background has been a lie.  The first season starts with the death of his Uncle.  His parents were killed when he was little, and he was raised by his Uncle.  He starts to do some digging and discovers a secret organization and that his uncle was a spy.  So much happens in Season 1 and Season 2 (that I am not going to re-cap for you here), you will just need to watch it yourself.  Trust me,  its worth it!  In the first two seasons,  Alex becomes a spy himself and has several dangerous missions and near-death encounters.

At the end of Season 2 he chooses to leave the Department and live as a “normal” teen.  Or so he tells them.  But really he is going after the people that he suspects killed his father.  He is just doing so alone with a couple of good friends.  I’m not sure why this series is so compelling, but I love that it is based on a British spy agency and overall, a clean show. If you’re like me with multiple kids of different ages, you need family-friendly shows that the whole family can watch together.    There is of course some violence and fight scenes, but it isn’t filled with tons of bad language or tons of sex because it centers around teenagers, and at his core, Alex is really just a good kid. He happens to be good at spy stuff as well ,but I love that he still has a moral compass and wants justice.

The series is based on a book series by the same name and written by Anthony Horowitz.  While I had never heard of it before its streaming debut and I have no idea how it compares to the novels, I feel like they did a really wonderful job in casting the actors.  The storylines are compelling and it definitely has a young James Bond vibe about it.

If you enjoy British shows, teenage drama and spy storylines then you will absolutely love this show.  The plots are not simplistic and all of the characters are complicate helping to make some great storytelling.
