I always loved John Candy and when he passed I knew he would be missed sorely. Not only for the person he was, but for the impact he had on film. So, when this documentary released I knew I just had to see it. And I’m so glad I did.

This documentary not only discusses the impact that John Candy had on Hollywood and the films they made, but also the people around him. We get to see interviews from people he worked with, friends and family. Not only do you hear from his widow, son and brother; you also hear from comedians and actors who worked with him and were influenced by him. There is footage of his home life that weaves in and out with memories shared, and plenty of views on his choices and thoughts shared. But, there is something we never hear; which is obviously the focus of the doc. John never discussed his weight and how he felt it impacted his career and life in general. There isn’t much innovative in this film. It shares the usual: family memories, stories from sets and friends who miss him singing his praises. It’s easy to watch and follow, which is a credit to any documentary.

The array of people being interviewed is one that shows how far and wide he reached. They range from a lot of names you know to ones you will know less who were closer to him and knew him more intimately. Most of the interviews sharing thoughts and memories never shared before.

Overall, I thought it was a great doc. It wasn’t anything ground breaking, but it definitely makes you feel something. Whether you feel at a loss as a fan or you feel the loss his family and friends feel, it is only a heartless villain who wouldn’t feel something. Overall, it was worth watching. Just make sure you have a box of tissues around “just in case”. 😉 I would give this doc a solid eight out of ten and think it’s a great watch for everyone!
