Watch our Interview with the filmmakers and subjects of Arcades and Love Songs. We Interview Director Ed Cunningham, Walter Day, and Billy Mitchell
Review by Marcus Blake
For gamers, the film King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is an important documentary that deals with the early aspects of eSports and competitions through classic games and how records kept being broken into the ’90s and early 2000s. That film centered on Walter Day, who was the first world record keeper and introduced us gamers like Billy Mitchell. 18 years later it’s still one of the best gaming documentaries, but what’s more interesting is the life of Walter Day and how he became the “de facto” father of eSports and the man who created a way to keep up with records. I admit that it was fun going back in revisiting that film, But like most of us, Walter Day had a second life. Creative people are multifaceted The latest documentary, Arcades and Love Songs: The Ballard of Walter Day, directed by Ed Cunningham who produced King of Kong revisits the life of Walter Day and his passion for music.
It’s always fascinating to see where celebrities end up…. where are they now? Getting to revisit all of these real-life personalities from King of Kong is a huge blast and to experience Walter Day’s musical chops, which is inspirational in a lot of ways. Never far from the gaming world and what Walter will always be known for, but his music also connects to the gaming world and his passion for life in general. I had a great interview with him, Billy Mitchell, and Ed Cunningham and it brought out the nostalgia for one of my favorite gaming documentaries. Arcades and Love Songs It’s like an overdue epilogue to King of Kong. It’s a great film that not only revisits how they became famous in the gaming world as well as King of Kong, but where they are now and how they continue the legacy of being record holders for classic games to the rise of eSports. More importantly, we get to see a different side of Walter Day that not only expands upon his world but the world in the industry that he helped create. I encourage gamers to check out Arcades and Love Songs especially, as a sequel when revisiting King of Kong: a Fistful of Quarters.
