Earth Abides will land in Australia on the same day as it premieres on MGM+ in the U.S.
The limited series has been snapped up by Australian streamer Stan from Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, which shops the show internationally.
Earth Abides is based on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel by George R. Stewart. It follows events after a vicious plague sweeps the globe and the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as what’s left of civilization slowly breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.
Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark) star, as first revealed by Deadline. Earlier this year Deadline also broke the news of further casting, including Aaron Tveit.
In the U.S. the series will premiere Dec. 1 on MGM+ with Stan premiering the same day.
Todd Komarnicki (Sully) is the writer and showrunner. Kearie Peak and Oscar-winner Michael Phillips (The Sting) from Lighthouse Productions, along with Juliana Maio, are executive producers.
Stan has a history of snagging series from Amazon MGM Studios. Recent acquisitions include Billy the Kid, Hotel Cocaine, and Fargo.
For Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, this is a splashy sales deal ahead of MIPCOM, the biggest international TV confab of the year. As well as Earth Abides, Amazon MGM will bring the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale to the market in Cannes, France, as well the Gladiators and Are You Smarter Than… formats.
