Anyone who knows me knows how much I ADORE Charlize Theron. And I have a love note that says she loves me too (restraining order, potato…whatever). But, I promise my review is unbiased. Mostly. Maybe. Let me first say…this is a great movie for Netflix, but would have been good on the big screen.
Apex is a movie about a climber, Charlize Theron, who goes out with a friend, Eric Bana, when they come across dangerous conditions. While attempting to get to safety he doesn’t make it (and we all cry when Bana dies). She decides to take a trip to Australia as he has mentioned before. While there she runs across some unsavory characters, some difficult terrain and the kind of stories nightmares are made of. Its a new take on “Man is the Most Dangerous Game.”
The acting is decent. Taron Egerton is easy to believe in his role and so is Charlize Theron. As usual, she is fantastic, but she is in every movie she stars in even if the movie isn’t that good. While You are watching them you don’t really think of other characters they played before and I think it’s a great indicator of suspension of disbelief. The direction is ok and so is the cinematography. While there is nothing innovative or ground proving, they do a good job of leaving breadcrumbs for you to pickup.
The story isn’t original, but it’s a decent variant of what’s been done before, still entertaining though. I was able to figure it out in the first five minutes, but I watch a ton of true crime and honestly I’m too good at that game. It was a fair story with some decent wrap around. Overall, I would say it wasn’t bad. I would give it an seven. It wasn’t amazing, but nothing a drinking game or some cruising on your phone while you watch can’t fix. And ladies…swing scene. That’s all I’m going to say. And you’re welcome.
