Thursday Murder Club was the quiet, mystery drama we all needed this fall. Starring the screen greats of Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie it reminded us of the power of truly great acting. There were not any high-speed chases, or elaborate stunts or fights, just a poignant and interesting storyline told by great Actors. I often worry that the golden years of the truly great actors–who didn’t need CGI, explosives, or other flashy stunts to make their movies compelling–may be starting to dwindle. Thursday Murder Club is. good, old-fashioned sleuthing movie where the main characters are Seniors in an Assisted Living facility who aren’t done with life yet.
Even though the pace is slower, the movie is filled with poignant moments, subtle twists and turns and the chance to see some truly great acting by actors that have lit up our screens for years. With Oscars, Emmy’s, Tony’s and even the title of Dame as part of their resume, anyone in a certain age category will recognize these acting greats immediately. Sadly, many of the younger generation will have never heard of them, which makes it all the more compelling that they were all cast together in this simple but fun and exciting film.
There was humor, there was detective work and there was a reminder that age is often only a number. If you are looking for a fun film to snuggle up with a blanket and some hot chocolate this fall, this movie hits the spot. Really doesn’t get any cozier than this quaint mystery and its loveable characters.
There are also a slew of amazing supporting actors rounding out this film– David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Jason Ritchie, and Jonathon Pryce to name a few! The movie centers around this group of seniors that usually only attempts to solve cold cases being thrust into a modern day murder as the owner of their Senior Living Home is murdered.
As they attempt to solve this mystery behind the police’s back they also stumble upon answers to one of their own cold cases that ends in a very tragic way.
Fans of cozy mysteries and acting greats everywhere will cheer for this mystery get-away from reality.
