Hulu has ordered a pilot for a new drama project titled Southern Bastards, based on Jason Aaron and Jason Latour’s graphic novel series of the same name, from writers and executive producers Bill Dubuque (OzarkThe Accountant) and Nia DaCosta (CandymanThe Marvels).

Matt Olmstead (Chicago P.D., Law & Order: Organized Crime) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The project comes from Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Proximity Media, in Association with Fifth Season, where Dubuque has an overall deal.

Southern Bastards show follows a tenacious military vet into Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. What she finds is a murderous hornet’s nest of organized crime run by the winningest high school football coach in the South.

Additional EPs include Aaron and Latour, Layne Eskridge for POV Entertainment, and Gabrielle Nadig. DaCosta, who will also direct the pilot, exec produces through her The Once and Future, Inc. production banner.

The “Southern Bastards” graphic novel series was released in 2014 and published by Image Comics. The story is centered on a small town in Alabama where residents love their BBQ, high school football, and organized crime.

Dubuque is the co-creator of Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series Ozark. His first feature was Warner Bros.’ The Judge, led by Robert Downey Jr., also wrote A Family Man starring Gerard Butler and Willem Dafoe, as well as The Accountant and its sequel, The Accountant 2. Most recently, Dubuque executive produced the new Peacock series M.I.A., a crime thriller set in South Florida.

DaCosta most recently wrote, directed, and produced Hedda, starring Tessa Thompson in the titular role. Up next, she directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, set for theatrical release on Jan. 16. Her prior credits include directing and co-writing The Marvels, becoming both the youngest filmmaker and the first Black woman to helm a Marvel Studios feature. She also wrote and directed the horror film Candyman. She is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, Casarotto Ramsay, and Del Shaw Moonves.

Olmstead is the co-creator of two OneChicago series: NBC’s Chicago PD and Chicago Med. He was a longtime showrunner on Prison BreakNYPD BlueChicago Fire, and FBI: International. Most recently, he served as an executive producer on Hulu’s upcoming Furious. Olmstead is represented by WME and GGSSC.

Aaron and Latour are repped by Angela Cheng Caplan and Harris Miller, and WME represents Eskridge.
