Superman filmmaker and DC studio chief James Gunn has taken to X to offer a first look at Jimmy Olsen, as played by Skyler Gisondo, in his Warner Bros superhero flick.
He posted the set photo yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of the character, who debuted in comic books on August 25, 1941.
“Happy Anniversary to Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as “office boy” in Action Comics 6),” writes Gunn in the post, which you can view below. “Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster & Bob Maxwell. I can’t wait for you to see @SkylerGisondo’s portrayal in #Superman on July 11, 2025. @dcofficial @superman.”
One of the Superman franchise’s classic characters, Olsen is a young photojournalist who works alongside Clark Kent aka Superman (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) at the Daily Planet. Known for roles in films like Licorice Pizza, Booksmart and The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, along with numerous TV projects, Gisondo’s collaboration with Gunn on the tentpole is his first.
Gunn announced the completion of production on Superman in July, writing on Instagram, “I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor.”
The first title in a revamped DC slate overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran, Superman follows the superhero of the same name as he looks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Slated for release in theaters on July 11, 2025, the film has Nicholas Hoult playing the role of villain Lex Luthor. Others set for roles include Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Wendell Pierce and Beck Bennett, to name just a few. Gunn directed from his own script, drawing on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, with Safran producing.
