Greetings Gamers! Its yet another installment of everyone’s little loved and little read gaming critic making another serious, but ever so enjoyable rants on paper. Gears of War E-Day is the focus of conversation today as the title gives it away. This new installment in the Gears universe is the big setup for all that we now know in the Gear of Wars story through five games. and story lines from past game, someone by be noticing the shift in tone when it comes to this game and that is about to be explained. Let’s start out with what making this an overall enjoyable experience of a day one game brought to you by Microsoft and Game Pass.

The Campaign itself is graphically amazing like a sweeping portrait on Unreal 5 engine, with the story playing out like a well scripted Hollywood film. With a narrative set in a much deeper vein of emotional loss, empty promises of rulers, and the notion of being nothing more than a means to an end in a government agenda. Core writing that feels as if the writers spent months listening or reading the words of real soldier that have experienced the loses of war and at times gave me strong memories of my military experience.

Horde Siege mode is an engaging take on the continuing developing endgame of this narrative, allowing for some fun possibilities for gamers to experience the early struggle of the conflict as it unfolds and brings players to the starting moments of the opening game. As the mode sits currently it is easy for gamers to feel as if they will quickly reach a limit where the game doesn’t over much outside of repetitive grind, but it’s still early days and there are in game hints abound at to what could very well come next.

Versus mode is a very bare bones that keeps the idea of PvP at its early day basics of the 90’s, which in my mind is an amazing way to start and then expand upon. The simple pleasure of picking up a weapon and graphically slaughter another player is giggle worthy, there are even bot modes for players that wish to gain the cosmetics for this mode without dealing with a human that cheats or plays unfairly.

The only complaints of the game I have directly are not directly related to the game itself with two exceptions regarding moments in the storyline where the game is dark beyond darkness making the need for adjusting the brightness and contrast a must as I played the game during the daytime, while also drawing the curtains at a few points to avoid any issues of glare. My other issue falls with the missions where the map feels much too large, Gears games are historically narrative driven games that sprinkle in a few hidden objects here and there to expand upon lore or break up the stress after a fire fight. But there are moments where the maps feel as if there should have been a guided tour with a better map than the game provides.

The only real downside to this game is simply the community that is behind it, many so called influencers, streamers, ad critics have decided that the character of Mags is too much and potentially ruins the game. The argument is that Mags somehow hijacks the game, and the story line is less about the popularized characters of Marcus and Dom, not only have these people missed the mark on the narrative they are completely unaware of how character development work in properly written narratives. With all honesty, it is grounded in more realism than the past games of overly “Alpha Male” narratives. Complaints being expressed online about the games short comings have only to do with a simple and direct answer, the complainers are racist sexists who have no real understanding of how in field combat military life works. Comments regarding other female character in past games revolve around the fact the character is either white and pretty or is never seen on screen ever, leaving the question unanswered, why does every female have to be portrayed as sexually appealing? Finally, comments on Mags taking charge of the squad are based out of ignorance and fragile male egos, as Mags is a local INF the city the game takes place in and is established to have had more field time than Marcus or Dom, so if the characters want to survive a situation they are not familiar with or prepared for, they default to following the most experienced person with them. On paper does Marcus out rank Mags? Yes, but in warfare experience wins out every time because no one wants to die from something stupid. These complaints are silly and take away from an honest critique of  E-Day, and you know how critical I can be of games.

All in all, Gears of War E-Day is a fresh take on the Gears franchise and past lore while inviting the player to be a part of the possibilities that come with the future content releases, in game events, and fresh blood being brought about. This makes it easy for this game to be rated 8 of 10 and placing it firmly in the top five games of 2026.  If you’re any kind of fan of the Gears franchise, then this game is a must play. So, grab a controller and get that chainsaw revved up, it’s time for war.
