Season Finale Week! – Castle, Arrow, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Allison Costa

Well this past week was full of Season Finales!  Some of them I really loved and others kind of missed the mark.  With the news of the cancellation of “Star-Crossed” we won’t waste time with a review but I was a little sad that just as it was picking up some steam it is already cancelled.

Instead, let’s start off with ‘Castle”.  So this is one show whose character’s I love and that has had a lot of excellent episodes but also a lot of duds this past season and I haven’t seen tons of consistency.  All of the episodes that dealt with Kate’s mom and uncovering more of the mystery were very intriguing but a few of the episodes—like the 70’s throwback—were kind of lame and didn’t really go anywhere or add to the plot line.  I was a little disenchanted with the season finale as most of the episode was a little dull and dealt with Kate’s supposed husband that she knew nothing about for the last 15 years and trying to get him to sign divorce papers—I guess they were going for funny?  It didn’t really work for me and then the ending was even more of a bust.  Just as things are finally coming together for their wedding after they had previously fallen apart, Castle is in a horrible car accident on his way to the event and as Kate rushes to the scene it ends with a car burning and the implication that Castle is dead.  There are several problems with this.  First, if you are going to end on a perceived cliffhanger then there should have been a little more build up as to who is chasing Castle, who might be after him and what for—engage the audience in the mystery.  The conspiracy with the Senator is over so who is the new threat?  Or they were going for the whole comic-relief episode that they started out with by introducing Kate’s faux husband then at least end on a happy note and have Beckett and Castle finally tie the knot.  In my opinion the majority of the episode and the ending did not go together and it earns a sad rating of 4 for me this season even though I love the show.

Next comes, the season finale of S.H.I.E.L.D.  This is another show that was hard for me to get addicted to in the beginning and kind of lacked momentum but luckily it picked up the pace after “Captain America” the movie came out.  I have really enjoyed the overlap between the show and the movie and of course it was awesome that Samuel L. Jackson made a guest appearance as Fury in the finale. Although, I was a little sad that it looks like Ward receives no redemption after all, the majority of the finale was a success for me.  There was some good action, the good guys won and even some humor as Bill Paxton is completely destroyed by Colston after first appearing to make a comeback.  I’m not sure that I am completely on-board with Colston as the new director of a new S.H.I.E.L.D—as much as I like him, the bad boy image they have tried to create for him the show differs greatly from his nice guy/nerdy image from The Avengers movie and I am not sure they have successfully made the cross-over yet. However, despite this the season finale gets a 7 from me.

I saved the best for last as it was the Season Finale of Arrow on Wednesday and it did not disappoint!  I had not been greatly displeased with some of the episodes leading to the end so I was nervous about the finale but they completely delivered.  There were so many great elements that I am not sure where to begin.  So many different factions came together to defeat Slade Wilson, some amazing surprises with the meeting of Malcolm and Thea, the news that Dinkle is going to be a father, the exit of Sarah and the cliff hanger of not only what will happen to Laurel’s father, but of Oliver’s time in Hong Kong and how he first met Amanda!  Ending with Slade imprisoned on the island was very intriguing and I am curious, as usual, as to how it all ties together.  The only real bummer moment for me was when it was revealed that Oliver’s confession of love for Felicity was just part of a trick to get to Slade!  Dangit!  Poor Felicity. Although, I still think their ending up together may be part of the plan, for now it seems that Oliver remains aloof over who he really cares about.  We have seen Helena come and go, now the exiting of Sarah, so for now only Laurel and Felicity remain.  Although there is a past with Laurel for some reason so bothers me and I am still rooting for Felicity!  Curious to know who is team Laurel and who is team Felicity out there?  Please leave your comments!  For me the season finale gets a whopping 9!
