A Nerd Mom’s Review of “Mom’s Night Out” by Allison Costa

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers out there and mother-figures!  Of course this film came out at a great time to appeal to incoming audiences and it did have some good moments.  I don’t know that someone who has never been a parent to some degree male or female could truly appreciate or even like this film, but those of us who are definitely found relatable moments.  There were many times I laughed out loud at some of the ridiculousness but I also felt it dragging in some parts and it did not have a tremendously clever plot.  I did find the acting fairly enjoyable and I liked the overall feel and meaning behind the film, but felt it was lacking a little in its staying power, meaning that a few scenes I wanted to fast forward.  I also liked most of the female characters in the movie, but most of the men I felt were a little ridiculous.  Why must we always make fathers look like complete idiots and absolutely incompetent when it comes to children?  I know a lot of excellent fathers out there so the fact that they didn’t even have one dad in the movie that wasn’t completely clueless bothered me a little bit.

As a mother of five young children with a sixth baby to arrive in just a few months, of course I could relate to the feelings of being overwhelmed as so many do, but they always have to take it to extreme conditions and make it appear as if all mothers are severely stressed and somewhat unhappy, which I don’t really care for so it was a refreshing change of pace when they had the main character, Allyson played by Sarah Drew, talk about how much she loved being a mom and really she just needed to adjust her expectations and her attitude.  Although I did find the film a little over the top at times, and even found myself thinking that I had scene this movie before; i.e. Adventures in Babysitting with Elizabeth Shue or in more recent years Date Night with Steve Carrell and Tina Fey,  the biggest difference with this movie was probably its religious undertones.  It wasn’t super “in your face”, but there was definitely a theme of faith and one’s relationship with God to understand their purpose and enjoy the meaning in all of the chaos.  I think I probably liked the beginning and the ending of the movie the most as the middle, although checkered with some funny scenes, did drag a little for my taste.

Also if I had just one night off from my responsibilities I don’t know that I would simply just go to dinner or even bowling for that manner. I would probably want something a little more adventurous or fun like rock climbing, a concert, or some other fantastic event, so the fact that they were just trying to have dinner didn’t seem to “girls night out” for me.

I don’t think I can recommend going to see this movie in the theater, but for a quiet evening at home when you just want a feel good family film that will probably make you feel better about your parenting skills, then Mom’s Night Out will fit the bill. I give it a 6!
