The 100: Pilot Episode Review by Robin Thaxton

The CW has been known for doing melodramatic teenage romance and after school specials. Recently, it seems they have switched from that and have moved on to sci-fi and fantasy themed television, most of their shows still lean towards the melodramatic side. As of late, they have seen success with shows like Arrow, and hopefully they took some ideas from it and use those to not make The 100, another sci-fi drama, like all of the other pilots they’ve made so far this year. With the first episode of The 100 they did not focus on the romance very much, and that is a step in the right direction. Especially with one of the first sci-fi shows they have focusing on a female lead.

The 100 is about a group of 100 teenage delinquents who are sent to Earth from a spaceship that was made up of all of the shuttles and satellites that had been in orbit when some nuclear apocalypse happened. These teenagers were sent to Earth in order to see if it was habitable, as well as to make more time for those on the ship as the air supply runs out . The show is based off of a book by the same name.

It has a very Lord of the Flies feel to it. The voice of reason comes to us as a girl named Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) who is the main character. While the pilot has some pretty good stuff in it overall, it felt a little rushed, and normally that would be a bad thing. But, since they are only doing a twelve episode run with the first season it just gives us more time for the action, and less filler episodes later on down the road.

There have been two shows I have been looking forward to watching since networks announced their fall lineup for 2013, and The 100 was one of those shows. I’m glad to say it is shaping up to be a pretty spectacular show and I hope it stays that way.
