If you have seen the trailer for The Phantom Thread, you have probably thought about seeing it. There is also the attention that is being given to the costume department for the film. Needless to say, it is getting quite a bit of attention. But, the question is whether it lives up to the hype or if it is something you can wait to rent. These days, it can be hard to assess from a trailer whether you are going to get what you think you will. I think that you’ll find this movie satisfying, but it depends on what you like and what you expect.

If you want to see some great acting, Daniel Day Lewis is always a safe bet. And if you are a fan of great actors, this film won’t disappoint. Granted, he isn’t the only actor. And some of the other actors leave a little to be desired. But, it wasn’t horrible acting in the least. And what few bad moments there are tend to be contrasted by Daniel’s great performance, so they are easy to overlook. He carries the film, which is great. He is obviously the star and the main focus, which works great for the film’s storyline. Not only because he plays a man, who is caught up in his work, in a narcissistic way. And not only because his character is the focus of every other character in the film. It also plays into the storyline, providing a little twist that becomes hard to swallow.

No spoilers, don’t worry.

If you are a fan of aesthetics, you’ll be very pleased with this film. The beautiful costumes aren’t the only draw in the movie. The palate is one that doesn’t overwhelm but offers a subtle beauty that you almost have to look for. It is one that seems peaceful, in a way that is almost drab. Almost. I found it to emphasize the elegance and minimalism of the story and the environment it takes place it. It is sophisticated in a way that emphasizes the beauty of the dresses, which also comes in handy when considering the storyline. I thought that this also lent to the way the film sets you at ease, only to create tense and dramatic moments sporadically.

Having mentioned the storyline and the two major facets that contribute to it, I should tell you a little about it. But, rest assured that I am not going to tell you anything that might spoil it for you. The most important thing to me was that it was different. It wasn’t something I had seen before or that even seemed close to previous stories we’ve seen. On top of the original story is the macabre twist at the end. It was one that I didn’t see coming, at all. When the movie was over, I felt like I had just finished reading something by Edgar Allen Poe. And I mean that in the best way possible. It was darker than I thought it would be, but something that was delicate and subdued.

Overall, I thought it was a great movie. I enjoyed it and loved the storyline. I thought it was beautifully shot and the acting was good. There has been a lot of mention about the costumes, which I thought was odd. I saw them and didn’t understand the hype. However, I was thinking about it in a current context. Given the time that the film takes place, the dresses were amazing and beautiful; but that is something that has to be taken into consideration. I can see that there might be some guys who wouldn’t like this film. If you’re more into action movies and macho guys, this won’t be something you’ll find entertaining. It is a slow burn movie, but like a great cigar, it leaves a satisfaction at the end that is worth it. If you like dark dramas, suspense, and dark romance; you’ll like this movie. There is a chance that you won’t think it’s amazing, just great. But, if you see the trailer and it looks appealing; it is worth checking out. I would easily give it a solid eight and pay the full ticket price for it. However, I would be prepared for the person you are taking to moan a little and possibly dislike it.
